Suncoast Quilting Circle History (Anything
underlined is a link. Updated 1/21/12) The Suncoast Quilting Circle was established in 1981. We are a not for profit organization with over 100 members. Except for the holiday season, we meet every Wednesday morning and in the evening on the 3rd Monday of the month. The Purpose of forming this group is to preserve the art of quilt making, stimulate and encourage interest through educating members and the community. Our group is diverse, energetic and community oriented. Members' ages have range from 13 years old to young married, to those with careers, to retired from all parts of the country. We are all eager to learn new techniques and ideas. Our group is friendly and knowledgeable. Visitors are always welcome at our meetings. At our meetings we have had workshops, lectures, demonstrations, and sales day. We encourage Show & Tell, which inspires us to keep quilting. Our projects have included seasonal blocks, friendship blocks, annual
Christmas quilt, block of the month and every other year a quilt show, which includes a raffle quilt, made by our members. Our next Quilt Show will be Mar 2-3, 2012.
We have an informative newsletter to keep our members up to date. We have quilting retreats
and our Summer Enrichment Workshop Day has grown to included our winter members in a Winter Enrichment Workshop Day. We have for
the benefit of our members an extensive library with over 425 books, magazines, DVD's & video's. We take bus trips to quilt shows. Our members travel a lot and bring back
ideas and 6" squares of fabric to share with each member. There are many talented members of the group who have
won prizes and appeared in publications. Our guild holds memberships in National Quilting Association, Inc., www.nqaquilts.org and www.ssqa.org Sunshine State Quilters Association, a Florida state based guild. Our members are very active with community service projects. For example, we make
lap quilts, bibs, preemie hats, wheelchair and walker bags, booties for nursing homes, hospitals, and centers for preschoolers
and infants. The most popular item that members choose to make is the lap quilts. In our commitment
to the next generation, we have helped the Guardian Ad Litum Suncoast Voices for Children Foundation
on National Adoption Day to create special quilts designed by the children, which was auctioned off to raise funds.
Another project that is also close to our hearts is making baby quilts for Project Linus and helping
with donations to the Christmas Toy Shop right here in St. Petersburg. As hurricane Katrina hit the shores of our country, our guild again joined the many relief efforts and made 33 bed quilts in 2 weeks. Other donations from our guild include books for local libraries, contributions to Hospice, WUSF-TV Channel 16 and St. Petersburg College Educational Scholarship Fund. For several years we have been supporting our Military with quilts, Christmas Stockings & Pillowcases. If you'd like more information regarding any of our projects or would like to make a donation, please contact us below. A
